Safe Hiring Expert to Present Webinar on Avoiding Illegal Screening Practices


Attorney Lester Rosen, founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of global background check provider Employment Screening Resources® (ESR), will present a live webinar titled “Avoiding Illegal Pre-Employment Screening Practices: Update on Background Checks, Ban the Box, Criminal Records, and Salary Secrecy Law”on Thursday, January 9, 2020, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Pacific Time.

Rosen – author of “The Safe Hiring Manual” – will explain that employers often find themselves caught in the middle when it comes to effective hiring. On the one hand, a bad hire can result in a legal nightmare that includes lawsuits for mere technical violations of screening laws. On the other hand, background checks have become increasingly regulated by state and federal legislation as a result of such litigation.

In the webinar produced by continuing education provider Clear Law Institute, Rosen will show attendees how to navigate through the screening process not only avoid bad hires, but also prevent legal action by ensuring the background checks performed on applicants did not violate the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) guidance, and a host of state laws. Attendees will learn:

  • Fair Chance hiring laws that go further in regulating how employers use criminal records.

  • How to ensure compliance with the FCRA to avoid class action lawsuits for technical violations.
